7 essential skills to take on the job

By: Robert b. Tucker, President of The Innovation Resource Consulting Group

In a time of economic difficulties, unprecedented staff reductions, budget cuts and constant output, the professional survival tips always seem exhausted convey the same message: be visible, not search enemies flatter the boss, and work harder still.

In fact, you and work hard, and simply more work probably not hard enough for you to be someone valuable to your employer, nor will rely solely on their functional abilities, expertise and experience in the job.

The good news is that there is something you can do to take charge of your career, if it is willing to consider. Based on research and interviews with 43 outstanding employees who peers, bosses and colleagues identified as essential, I think the only way to become more valuable to your organization and be incredibly happy with their work throughout the process, is to focus on master a new set of strategic skills.

personal request. Prerequisite: to have innovation skills (I-Skills)

To survive and succeed, all employees need to build and unleash a new set of skills in their work and their life skills innovation or R-Skills for short. While organizations around the world are cutting jobs while they are in the sudden and urgent need for professionals with skills and capabilities needed to achieve unconventional results. There a great demand for employees who are able to devise ways to cut costs without sacrificing service and add distinctive value to encourage loyalty from current customers as well as to seize opportunities.

In today's global economy, innovation is to invent new products and services. Today, innovation means to determine how and where to add value wherever you are and wherever you work. Innovation is the act of generating ideas and realize them successfully to solve problems and create opportunities . Also is to get involved fully in the work we're doing, and move forward in the chaos of a time of change. As one manager we interviewed during our research: "I've never felt such satisfaction in doing my job as now, I have the opportunity to work with a team truly extraordinary, and I'm having fun as ever."

Innovation is not something you do when you finish work. is how you approach your work. Innovative thinking has to do with how one discovers and pounces on the opportunities, and how the initiative encourages team to realize new projects.

The transition from being someone who can spare someone indispensable begins with small steps: volunteer to lead the work activities to benefit a charitable organization, suggesting a recycling program or participate in a team working on a special project to implement a necessary change. What develops its I-Skills is the reward you get for doing things that are beyond their normal workload. be merely "competent" is not enough, but having the ability to "complete new projects" will, in time, you will be a key and searched in demand, hard to replace their colleagues who try to follow.

There are seven I-Skills you need to master to become indispensable in hypercompetitive world today.

1. Adopt the mindset of the opportunities.

Where others see problems, you see potential. When others sink into endless details, you step onto the roof to see the full picture. In other words, you realize that the prospect determines everything.

My friend Mark Sanborn, a motivational speaker and author of The Fred Factor (The Fred Factor), realized that more and more averse felt when the phone rang, so I wrote "obligation or opportunity?" On a sticky note Post "It left side of your phone. Now, every time you answer the phone, it does so with an attitude of service, gratitude and positive expectations.

To change perspectives, challenge to devise solutions, to see the full picture and give free rein to their creativity. Consider ten ways to address the problem or make a list of ten aspects proper operation in the department where he works today.

2. Be an expert to take by assault their assumptions.

Ever heard himself mutter the words "must be a better way to do this?" At that moment, you challenged the belief that the status quo is the best or only way to do something, and opened the door to new thinking. That is the spark of innovative thinking, because innovation continues where assumptions.

Innovators personal assumptions, professional and industry to develop new thoughts and without limitations.

have years of experience in a particular industry can be an obstacle to take by assault the assumptions. "Things have always done it" or "we tried (referring to a new approach) and was not" often are locks. However, asking these questions have a purpose, like "I wonder what would happen if ..." or "what would be a completely different way of dealing with this situation?" carving is where the discipline of innovation. Press the button "reset" mentally, and let the questions begin to flow.

3. Have a passion for the customer.

Steve Jobs designs products that shake the world of people. How? Making great teams of specialists collaborate and understand that the efforts that result in almost perfect never be enough. Jobs will not settle for anything but stunned let the end user, and neither should you.

To convert your products into icons that reflect how indispensable you are, strive to establish rapport with the customer. Force yourself to listen deeply to what the client wants to achieve. Exit bubble culture, interact with a sufficient number of customers and allow yourself to become fascinated with what they say. This gives an impression of what the outside world thinks, feels and perceives about your organization, as opposed to what people assume within the company.

4. Anticipating the facts.

Ever has tried to walk in the dark without a flashlight? is a disturbing feeling, and can often result in bumps and bruises if you hit something that did not see. In today's hypercompetitive world, your flashlight is its ability to track emerging trends, which means that you are transformed into a voracious reader of news from the world of business, current events and latest technologies. also means that you take the time to evaluate and interpret the changes as they relate to your organization and how it might need to adapt and lead change.

5. Continually strengthen their "factory of ideas."

Everyone has ideas, but few know how to keep strengthened their "ideas factories" and produce a lot of them constantly, when and where needed. Here are some suggestions:

Enhance your creative environment. Turn your office into an inspiring creative brainstorming, or find inspiration outside the office.

Know when to pursue a single task. People think they are more productive when working on multiple tasks at the same time, but research shows otherwise. Michelangelo did several things at once when he entered fully into the creative mode, you should not do it.

Practice creativity is a gift from the gods, but the result of preparation, routine and discipline.

habit of downloading your ideas. If not caught in the minute it occurs, is unlikely to act based on taking them later. The mind is great when you have new ideas, yet is a terrible storage device.

6. Be considered an outstanding partner.

If you are a genius in his area of \u200b\u200bexpertise, but lacks the skills of collaboration, will never become indispensable. As in most organizations the major projects carried out by teams focusing on special projects, its ability to be a good "follower", and eventually a good team leader will determine his worth as an innovator.

When you contribute successfully with teams and working groups, is rewarded in three ways to which I have called the three Rs of effective collaboration:

Result: you share the glory of mission accomplished, has a story to tell and a path behind it.

Reputation: its successful contribution takes to receive invitations to work on future projects.

Revenue: The lasting reward for participating in a successful collaboration is that you see how customers, both internal and external use their "product." You know you've marked the difference, solved a problem or created an opportunity for the organization, your team or department where you work.

7. Being an expert in selling your idea.

Selling new ideas has always meant to overcome obstacles, overcome objections and gain commitment for change. How is this done? Isolate the benefits and seek feedback from friends, mentors and people that you trust. Then consider innovation in the style of the person or persons who will present his idea. For example, if your audience is more attuned to "The complete picture, not overwhelm with details. Use the words that make them pay attention, the innovative use a known language.

Start developing your skills today

At a time when most industries and organizations are undergoing a process of constant change, no time to lose. Start thinking how you can develop these skills as they relate to their work, projects being carried out at the moment and want to suggest initiatives in the future. Master the mindset, skill set and tools innovative and soon his reputation for results you get what precedes you wherever you go.
